About

Claire Greenspan

Artist’s statement

I make expressive abstract paintings with subtle figurative elements that emerge from paying close attention. I am drawn to what is easily overlooked: the softness of a fading flower, the weight of silence, the traces left by time, and the quiet resilience found in nature’s recurring cycles. These moments have become a way of understanding my own experiences of change, loss, and renewal. I’ve noticed that there’s a close connection between beauty and decay, and this transformation makes time visible.

My paintings do not begin with fixed outcomes. They grow through observation, memory and intuition. When listening to music while painting, the rhythmic nuances influence my mark-making. Sometimes photography forms part of this process, helping me to linger a little longer on an idea. Working primarily with acrylic paint, inks, and ink-based pencils, my choice of colour palette may lead me, as much as form. I find that colour carries emotional resonance; it can whisper, soothe, unsettle, or hold a memory beyond words. Fluid washes and more deliberate, tactile marks exist side by side, each finding its place as the work slowly reveals itself. I’m curious about exploring the relationships between fragility, and strength, and stillness and movement.

I have become less concerned with structure and more willing to follow uncertainty. I am interested in what cannot be held onto for long: what appears, fades, returns, and quietly transforms – what beauty becomes as it changes. Painting has become a way of noticing these moments and giving them time to breathe.
